Updated response to Chilean floods
Last week we reported that heavy flooding caused by abnormally heavy cut roads, knocked out electricity and threatened several communities in the usually bone – dry Atacama Desert region. This is the worst flood the North of the country has seen in 80 years, thus forcing the Chilean government to issue a state of emergency; putting the region under military control.
According to Reuters, President Michelle Bachelet says it will cost at least $1.5 billion to repair the damages caused by the flooding and mudslides that has reportedly left a death toll of over two dozen people and 140 missing. Some 30,000 people have been affected by the floods – with over 2,000 now homeless. The Army has been deployed to clear blocked roads, provide medical aid and restore communication as quickly as possible.
The Cunningham Lindsey response to this event is being co-ordinated by Hugh Gallagher in Columbia. Staff from our own offices in Bogotá and Mexico are currently engaged on the ground and are being supported by our Chilean associates who are also in the region. We are actively engaged on large mining, retail and power losses surrounding this catastrophe and have a multi-disciplined team of adjusters, surveyors, forensic accountants and engineers available to support our clients at this time, on standby in our Latin American offices.
If we can provide you or your clients with any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact Hugh Gallagher in Colombia or Ben Price in London:

The local media quoted police as saying two people had been killed in the coastal town of Chanaral. At least 24 people were listed as missing in three communities hit by flooding, Deputy Interior Minister Mahmud Aleuy said.
On Thursday, thunderstorms with torrential rain moved in causing the Copiapo River to overflow its banks and forcing evacuations due to fears of mudslides.
